SPECIAL RECOGNITION:  Hillsborough Historical Society Wins National Award.

On Sept. 8 at the American Association for State and Local History's Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, Hillsborough Historical Society representatives accepted the Albert B. Corey Award for their volunteer efforts in cataloging and partially digitizing over 84,000 glass plate photographs and negatives.   The Corey Award is given by the AASLH Leadership in History Awards Committee at its discretion and has been given only 5 times since 1996.  We appreciate and commend their dedicated efforts.  Congratulations!

1.  Alstead Historical Society

 

Wed., Oct. 10 - Wed., Oct. 31. 2nd Anniversary of the Alstead Flood Exhibit on display at the Historical Society of Cheshire County Exhibit Hall, 246 Main St., Keene.  The exhibit honors those who lost their lives in the flood, shows the power of water, and documents the place of flood in local history.  Hours: Tues., Thurs., & Fri. 9am-4pm; Wed. 9am-9pm; Sat. 9am- 12noon.  Free admission.  For more info, call 352-1895 or visit http://www.hsccnh.org.

 

2.  American Independence Museum

Sat., Oct. 13, 10am-4pm.  Harvest Festival.  Visit with Abraham Lincoln and NH's own Sarah Josepha Hale, who together made Thanksgiving a national holiday.  Enjoy the museum's focus on 18th century textiles with displays and live demonstrations.  Children's activities, food & music.  Plus, downtown Exeter merchants will have family-oriented harvest activities throughout the day. 3.  Center for Rural Partnerships

Thurs., Oct. 4. 6pm-7:30pm.  White Mountain Art, Land Use Planning & Economy.  Presented by Bob Cotrell from the Remick Museum, Tamworth.  History and nature behind the art, geological formations that attracted the artists, flora and fauna, technical, etc. Held at Heritage Commons, Plymouth State University, Plymouth.  For more info, contact Psu-rural-partnerships@toto.plymouth.edu.

 

4. Enfield Shaker Museum

Sat., Oct. 6.  Harvest Festival.  Hands-on activities for the whole family, including an Applesauce Competition.  Free to Members; $5 Adults, $2 Children 6-8. 

 

Sat., Oct. 20.  10am-1pm. Shaker Chair Weaving Workshop.  Barbara Brady will teach how to tape a chair with Shaker fabric tape (available for sale in the Museum Store).  Registration limited.  $35/Member; $40 Nonmember.  Reserve by Oct. 17.

 

Sat., Oct. 27.  6:30pm.  Shaker Mystery Dinner:  "Who Shot Enfield Shaker Elder Caleb Dyer?"  Enjoy an entertaining program about this Shaker Trustee and dine in the elegant Great Stone Dwelling.  $30/Member; $35 Nonmember.  Reserve by Oct. 24.

5. Epping Historical Society

6.  Exeter Historical Society

7. Franklin Historical Society

Fri., Oct. 12.  6pm.  Special Event:  Unveiling of the Webster Bust Plaque.  In front  of the Franklin Congregational-Christian Church, 47 S. 8. Horatio Colony House Museum

Fri., Oct. 5. 7-8:30pm.  Candlelight Open House.  In collaboration with the Historical Society of Cheshire County, enjoy a candlelight tour of the 18th & 19th century museum and Wyman Tavern at night.  Free admission.

 

Sat., Oct. 13. 12noon-3pm.  Rocks Rock!  Visit the Horatio Colony House Museum and Nature Preserve and join a local geologist to view and learn about the spectacular rock outcroppings and natural formations at the preserve.  Program begins at the museum; parking available behind St. Bernard's Church. Free admission.

 

Through Sun., Oct 14.  Art of the Middle East:  Exhibit of Brass Objects & Rugs. View the museum's collections of Middle Eastern and Indian metalwork and rugs.

9. Lake Winnipesaukee Museum.

10. Little Nature Museum

Sun., Oct 28.  Surviving Getting Lost in the Woods, A Program For Teens & Adults.  Conducted by Rudy Bourget, certified in Wilderness First Aid with over 40 years experience.  Held rain or shine, at Gould Hill Orchards, Contoocook.  $7 Museum members; $10 Nonmembers; cost includes a personal "survival kit" to take home.  Program for Grades 6-8 11am-1pm and attendees must by accompanied by a parent. Grades 9-Adult 2pm-5pm.  Registration required as space is limited.  For more info and to register, call 746-6121 or visit http://www.littlenaturemuseum.org.

 

11. Meredith Historical Society

Tues., Oct. 2.  7:30pm.  Angling in the Smile of the Great Spirit.  Presented by Hal Lyon.  A NH Humanities Council Program.  Free Admission.  Meredith Main Street Museum, 45 Main Street, Meredith.  For more info, call 279-1190.

 

12. New Durham Historical Society

Sat., Oct. 6 & Sun., Oct. 7.  Annual Civil War Encampment.  Presented by the Charles W. Canney Camp Re-enactors.  Come talk to Union soldiers and observe camp life at this event that literally brings the past to life.  Special demonstrations will include mustering, drilling, inspections and other facets of camp life.  While the event is free, donations and proceeds from the sale of baked goods and other items will benefit projects that commemorate NH's involvement in the Civil War.  Held at 16 Ridge Road, New Durham.

 

Thurs., Oct. 11. 7:30pm.  A History of Land Protection in Northern Strafford County.  Presented by Jack Savage, VP of Communications & Outreach, NH Forest Society.  New Durham boasts two properties under protection by SPNHF - Jennings Forest and Cooper Cedar Woods - for a combined total of nearly 450 acres.  Learn about the significance of these protected areas and how they fit into the larger context of NH's efforts to balance land protection with the responsible use of renewable resources.

13. New Hampshire Farm Museum

Sat., Oct 13 & Sun., Oct. 14 10am-4pm.  Harvest Festival.  Come have Harvest lunch at the farm.  Make a scarecrow, a popcorn ball, and a candle. Carve a pumpkin, roast pumpkin seeds and check out the vegetable stand.  Hayrides, farm games and more.  $6 Adults; $3 Children; Free to Members.

 

Sat., Oct. 13, 4:30-6pm.  Old Fashioned Beanhole Bean Supper.  Beans are slow cooked overnight in a hole dug in the ground for that superb New England Flavor.  Includes ham, cole slaw, rolls, apple crisp with ice cream and beverages.  $8 Adults, $5 Children.

 

Sat., Oct. 20.  NH Growers Dinner.  NH Grown and Raised Foods Served.

14. Remick Museum

Sat., Oct. 6 10am-4pm.  Paint Out & Wet Paint Sale.  Artists from NHPlein Air will paint outdoors on the Museum grounds and in Tamworth Village from 10am-2:30pm, then will assemble at the Museum's Visitors Center to sell wet, unframed works of art to the public from 2:30-4:00pm.  The artist will contribute 30% of the sale price of each painting to support the Remick Museum.

 

Sat., Oct. 27. 10am-12noon.  Pumpkins Workshop.  Prepare a noon-time meal using pumpkins from the Remick Farm.  Learn about storing pumpkins and discover the many delights made from this underused garden gem.  Workshop cost is $15 and pre-registration is required with a deadline of Thurs., Oct. 25.

15. The Rocks Estate

16. Warner Historical Society

Sun., Oct. 21. 2pm-4pm. For Celebration & Satisfaction. A talk presented by Gerald Roy, a nationally renowned quilt collector and appraiser, who will bring a selection of his quilt collection from the 19th century. Admission $7; if you want to bring a quilt for comments only (no appraisals/value), there will be an additional charge of $5. Copies of “The Art of Comfort: Antique Quilts & Bed Coverings from the Pilgrim/Roy Collection” will be available for sale. All proceeds benefit the Warner Historical Society. MISCELLANEOUS

 

AHSNH has been contacted by Mr. Warren Mihachik of Northwood, NH who is very interested in telling his oral history to someone who can and is willing document it.  Mr. Mihachik has a lifetime of stories to tell, particularly regarding the able-bodied disabled integration into sports including basketball and fishing.  He has also undertaken a research project regarding castles, including Kimball's Castle in Gilford.  If you are interested in these issues or such an oral history project, please call him at 942-8075.
