1. From the Belmont Historical Society:

The Belmont Historical Society marks a milestone in 2009, celebrating its 4th community decade.  This 40th anniversary year will be led by two local citizens who helped found the organization: Suzanne Roberts, a retired educator and longtime regional activist, as president, and Wallace Rhodes, Town historian and driving force behind the award-winning Belmont Mill adaptive reuse effort throughout the 1990s, as vice president.  Additional officers elected include Brenda Paquette and Jane McLetchie, continuing as treasurer, who join other directors Linda Frawley, Diane Marden, and Magnus McLetchie.  For more information on upcoming programs and events, contact belmonthistory@gmail.com or visit http://belmonthistory.googlepages.com/home

 

2. From the Exeter Historical Society:

Tues., Feb. 3, 7:30pm.  Discovering New England Stone Walls.  Presented by Kevin Gardner.  This informal talk will cover a few of the main topics of his book, The Granite Kiss, touching on history, technique, stylistic development and aesthetics, and how and why New England came to acquire its thousands of miles of stone walls.  Free and open to the public.  Refreshments will be served at 7pm.  47 Front St., Exeter.  The Exeter Historical Society is open to the public on a weekly basis all year:  Tues. & Thurs. 2-4:30pm and Sat. 9:30am-12noon.  603-778-2335, info@exeterhistory.org, http://www.exeterhistory.org.

 

3. From the Laconia Historical & Museum Society:

Tues., Feb. 3 - Sat., Feb. 21. Special Exhibit:  World War I Artillery Shell Folk Art.  Provided by collector John W. Derby of Ashland, NH.  Derby is a collector of artillery shells from various wars, each depicting carvings or artistic motifs.

 

Tues., Feb. 17, 7pm.  Got Skis?  A presentation on the recently established LHMS youth curator project by Azra Karabegovic and Brittany Legasse, regarding the research, design and installation of the upcoming special exhibit on the history of skiing in the Laconia area. 

 

Thurs., Feb. 26, 6-7:30pm.  Got Skis? Opening Reception for this special exhibit on display through April 30.

4.  Federal funding assistance for damage sustained during December's ice storm is available for public agencies and non-profits; for example, work to correct damage to museum buildings, libraries or collections during the ice storm may be eligible for funding or reimbursement. 5.  The NH Department of Cultural Resources will present A Commissioner's Roundtable on Cultural & Heritage Tourism with Commissioner Van McLeod on Wed., Feb. 18, 12noon-2pm, hosted at the Capitol Center for the Arts, Concord.  There is no charge to attend the roundtable.  Attendees are invited to bring their own refreshments.  RSVP to Shelly Angers, Communications Coordinator, NHDCR: shelly.angers@dcr.nh.gov, 603-271-3136, http://www.nh.gov/nhculture.

 

6.  AASLH Leadership in History Awards.  Deadline March 1.  Initiated in 1945 to establish and encourage standards of excellence in the collection, preservation and interpretation of state and local history throughout North America, this award honors significant achievement in the field of local history and brings public recognition to small and large organizations, institutions, and programs that contribute to this arena.  Last year 4 winners were from NH:  Moffatt-Ladd House, Portsmouth; Strawbery Banke & J. 7. The American Association of Museum's Museum Assessment Program.  MAP is a fee or low cost way to strengthen your museum's operations and achieve excellence.  In less than a year, your museum can complete a self study, have an onsite consultation with a museum professional and gain the tools to become a stronger institution.  If your museum is facing challenging financial times, participating in the MAP can help:  prioritize goals to allocate resources wisely; document your needs to make a stronger case to funders; provide recommendations on ways to become an even stronger institution.  The 2009 Application & Guidelines are available for download at http://www.aam-us-org/museumresources/map/apply.cfmMuseums will be accepted on a rolling basis through the postmark deadline of Feb. 15.  For more information, contact staff at map@aam-us.org or 202-289-9118.

 

8.  Thanks to Jim Romer, of the Unity Historical Society, who provided a reference for a cataloging system in response to last month's inquiry. The Collections Management System (CMS), a low-cost, standardized, accessible tool for repositories such as museums, archives, and historical societies, whose collections may contain both documents and artifacts.  It runs under Microsoft Access 97 and is apparently used by the Maine State Archives (http://www.maine.gov/sos/arc/databases/index.html#CMS). Demonstration files (cmsdemo.mdb and smsdemdt.mdb) and program files (cms.mdb and dmsdata.mdb) may be downloaded.
